Photo from Mt. Nebo State Park on a foggy April 27, 2017, morning.
This photo is interesting because of the plume of steam rising from the nuclear plant.
On April 26, with Unit 2 in an outage, Unit 1 tripped due to a partial loss of offsite power when a tornado in Yell County damaged high-voltage transmission towers.
With power unavailable for the system that provides cooling from the lake, a backup cooling water system called “emergency” feedwater (EFW) was used. One of the EFW pumps is steam-driven. Steam was also released for cooling via atmospheric dump control valves.
Note: at other similar plants, the backup cooling water source is called auxiliary feedwater (AFW).
